Wasting Time on Social Media Show Notes
Bryan Person - Social Media Evangelist, LiveWorld
You have a finite amount of time to create content. Where is the best place to spend that time?
Choose the social media channel that is best for you based on;
- Your marketing purpose
- Your marketing challenge
- Where your customer will be
- How much time you have to spend on social media
- The strength of each social media tool
Twitter is the lazy man’s social media tool. It’s easy to post 140 characters and amass a lot of followers. It takes more time and thought to maintain a blog.
Blogs may be the most powerful social media marketing tool for small businesses. This is especially true if you customers will go to search engines to search for your type of business.
Blogs give you credibility, authority, and search engines like blogs.

Interview with Bryan was good. I agree with the Twitter difficulty. It can be a valuable tool, but misused, people will tune out. And as you say, social media will change. Best way is to stay sharp, as Bryan says, is to do research.
I agree the interview was good but it would be interesting to talk about the converging of all of these tools. Maybe do a survey to see what people use for what? How do they integrate them. Jay you talked about what you use twitter for after the interview and it would be interesting to hear how others use it.
For example I use it to give me a quick update on what is happening, like a newsreal. It is research for me. I like to build my network of individuals that I can learn from and perhaps connect with professionally. It is a educational and sharing platform for me.
Blog is a voice with my customers. My way of sharing to earn credibility and a lead generation tool.
My podcast is similar so I have integrated my podcast into my blog.ie I record my blog for those of us who need to do two things at once.
My website/ landing page and autoresponder is for sales. It will be interesting in what others have to say.
Also love the idea with the real estate guys doing a blog. I am married to an architect and have just started his blog. http://markmacinnis.com.au/ Infact it is going so well that we are going to dump his old web. The key is making it interactive, having good resources and focused on a target audience.
Keep us informed as to how the Real esate experience goes, we could all learn from it.
Cheers!
Great strategy you have there, Danielle. Here's how I use my social media tools:
Blog: Build credibility and authority, attract search engines.
Podcast: Extension of my blog, gain access to industry authorities, display my personality.
Twitter: Network with other marketers and bloggers around the world. A resource of information and current trends. Use when I need help.
Website: My anchor on the web. Display information about my company and my services. Links to all my other resources.
Facebook: Personal interaction with family, friends, and close business associates.
